After throwing a few parties in the last year, I had I gorgeous tequila and other liquor bottles that I saved. Just waiting to find an idea on how to reuse them...<br />
<br />
Then as I was replacing/repairing my outdoor solar lights, it occurred to me that I could stick the plastic solar tops on my pretty jars and bottles.<br />
<br />

<br />
All sorts of glass bottles will work for this project. At first, I wanted to do only the "fancy" bottles. Then I came to really like just the 2 liter Vodka bottles with a handle. I like all the different heights and sizes too.<br />

<b>Garden Artifacts for Christmas Decorations</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
One of my finds this summer on the west end of Eureka Springs, Arkansas was a great old wooden bucket. It was painted a lime green and I knew I must invest in it as they are hard to find. I wasn't sure just how I would use it but knew something would trip my fancy.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Sure enough this Christmas season presented just the right opportunity. My sister in law in Wilmington North Carolina shipped me a big box of large pine cones that fall to the ground from massive pine trees near her home. I've kept them by the front door in a planter all year long but wasn't happy with their destination. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br /><div style="text-align: center;">
<b>The Old Oaken Bucket</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I used a leftover bow from last year's decorations, the pine cones and an outdoor all weather battery candle to the old bucket. Below the pine cones I stuffed left over fake greenery as a filler. I have placed the bucket by our front door decorations. You will also find those outdoor decorations in another blog here. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I've also collected many old watering cans over the past two years as garden decorations. Placing artificial poinsettias in one that has a wash of red paint was a great touch for the back patio. Its easy to view out the back hearth room glass door. </div>

A year ago I stumbled on a blog that had a photo of a glitter champagne bottle while trying to come up with ideas for a New Year's Eve party. Ever since I have been hooked! My friends raved about the bottle and I decided for the next year I would gift glittered champagne bottle to anyone who invited me to their birthday party! The reception has been great, and I have made about a dozen of these now. They are really easy to do, but they take a little time.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b>Step 1:</b> Use painter's (blue) tape to cover anything on your bottle you don't want glittered. I have the top foil and most of the label glitter free. But you can glitter over the label if you want! I choose Piper Sonoma champagne mostly because it has a gold foil topper and it looks nice with gold glitter.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b>Step 2: </b>Spray paint your bottle with gold paint. Just a quick light coat is good enough. If you skip this step, the final product just doesn't look as polished and you can see some of the dark bottle through the glitter. Let it dry.</div>
<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Step 3:</b> Choose your glue method - Modge Podge/glue or a spray adhesive. I've used both methods and typically stick with modge podge. If you use the spray adhesive, you must be quick as it will dry fast. Cover the bottle with your glue. When using Modge Podge/glue I apply it with a brush.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNYoS384FHyarMtzrvoAAvhAyL5M-t6EPG9K2XZw5tt6Ht7T201QUyLonCiDgmk9QYJgGDoDxvq8onkhVE1ZODXSlp7ObUlFlcB6ynHc-jtKg1_u_eSGOJ4ROr1DXrXplNsOVCXWkHc8w/s1600/IMG_20150917_134405612_HDR.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNYoS384FHyarMtzrvoAAvhAyL5M-t6EPG9K2XZw5tt6Ht7T201QUyLonCiDgmk9QYJgGDoDxvq8onkhVE1ZODXSlp7ObUlFlcB6ynHc-jtKg1_u_eSGOJ4ROr1DXrXplNsOVCXWkHc8w/s400/IMG_20150917_134405612_HDR.jpg" width="225" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b>Step 4: </b>Immediately, while the glue is still wet, sprinkle with glitter. I hold the bottle over a box or plate to collect to excess glitter - there will be a lot. I can reuse the excess glitter. I sprinkle over several times to cover the entire bottle really well.</div>

Nothing is funner than gathering your friends together to ring in the new year! Here my ideas for a New Year's Eve Gathering!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b>Serve a potluck</b> - spending all your time cooking will spoil the fun, plus it gives your friends an opportunity to shine!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b>Make a signature cocktail</b>, with a fun themed name - I made Amber's French Kiss</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b>Make your place sparkle </b>- I glittered a bottle of champagne, and put up string lights. I also added a few large bottles with Christmas lights shoved inside to bookshelves and cabinets. I used shiney gold gift wrapping paper to decorate table tops and the bar too.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b>Play great music</b> - I used Google Play Music's radio NYE station and had great music I didn't have to worry about!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

By coincidence, his birthday has fallen on the premiere of the movies, so we have held a few Hunger Games themed parties! This year we started with a fun invitation to get the kids in the mood. We started the party with a series of Minute to Win it games and then headed off for the theater. Afterwards we had pizza and the kids watched the older Hunger Games movies. We topped it off with a District 13 Cake, since he was turning 13 and the Mockingjay Part 1 was all about District 13.<br />
<br />
For a party favor we made these really fun shirts. We used a "reserve technique". Instead of applying a iron on or stencil, we used bleach to remove color from the shirts. I used freezer paper that I cut out with an exacto knife to make a stencil. Then hung the shirts in the shower and used a spray bottle to apply the bleach. The custom Mockingjay shirts turned out beautifully!<br />

My oldest son was a HUGE Lego fan for about ten years and he amassed quite a collection during that time. If your child is into Legos, then you know they create a big mess. So I was always looking for ways to organize the Legos, that also allowed my son to continue to play with them. I wasn't very successful actually! As he got older my focus was to display these beautiful toys in a more mature way.<br />
<br />
I finally repurposed this small display shelf to hold their most important minifigs. I used <a href="http://amzn.to/1N9vS0n" target="_blank">green postboard</a> to cover the back. That served to help see the minfigs better, since they would show better than with a white background. Also the display shelf had star & moon cutouts I wanted to hide. Next I glued down a large <a href="http://amzn.to/1j60O3B" target="_blank">Lego plate</a> that I cut to fit each shelf. The height was too high, so I added a half shelves also made with the Lego plate. Then I added in all the<a href="http://amzn.to/1j64imO" target="_blank"> Lego Mini Figures</a> that we have collected through the years. It makes a lovely display on my son's wall.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I save pretty much all my glass jars, just in case a fun project comes up. Jam and jelly jars, peanut butter and pickle jars, olive and coconut oil jars! Each one is unique and will be great for some future repurposing project.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I hosted a large party where we decided to make small lanterns as the guest's party favor. It was a bonus that we could used the lanterns to decorate during the party, then they would help light the guests on their way home.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
The best part of this project is that over a year later, I still see friends using this party favor in their homes or patios!<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We used all different kinds of jars: pickle (bigger and squat), jam (wide mouthed and smaller), olives (taller with a wide mouth) and lots of pasta sauce jars. All the different shapes and sizes were fun to see!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
<b><span style="font-size: large;"><u>Super Simple How To:</u></span></b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
1. Soak the jars in soapy water to remove any glued labels, or use a knife to scrape off any remaining stickiness.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
2. Once cleaned, I painted the insides of each jar with a mixture of watered down glue (or modge podge)and silver glitter. The glue will dry clear, so only the glitter is left behind. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
3. I then used <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0014XEO68/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B0014XEO68&linkCode=as2&tag=allensauerconsul&linkId=UPAV5IT7KCUEVNZH" target="_blank">crafting wire</a> to wrap around the mouth and make a simple handle.</div>
<img alt="" border="0" src="http://ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?t=allensauerconsul&l=as2&o=1&a=B0014XEO68" height="1" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0014XEO68/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B0014XEO68&linkCode=as2&tag=allensauerconsul&linkId=UPAV5IT7KCUEVNZH" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com/widgets/q?_encoding=UTF8&ASIN=B0014XEO68&Format=_SL110_&ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=allensauerconsul" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
4. Add some fine sand to the bottom. Depending on the amount of glitter you may not be able to see much of what is inside the lantern.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
5. Insert a battery tea lights, and watch it twinkle!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I think this is so cool, because you are literally making something from nothing! With just a few supplies and a couple of minutes, you have a beautiful sparkly letter. All you need is a hot glue gun and glitter.<br />
<br />
I used a toothpick on a few of the letters, so I could later use them on a birthday cake. The others I attached a twine loop, so they could be hung. I think the neck of a wine or champagne bottle, as a gift tag. Or even hang the letters from the Christmas tree!<br />
<br />
Once I started, I wanted to make more and kept thinking of new uses for them. But my hand got less steady, so I stopped at five letters. In the future, I may print out some pretty calligraphy to trace.<br />
<br />
You could make symbols, or even numbers to top a birthday cake. What would you make with this fun hot glue trick?<br />
<br />

I've always found a little place for the lamp wherever I've lived, it's functional but not very exciting. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I wanted to keep it metallic and settled on a pretty copper.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
To start, I cleaned the lamp up and then gave it a light sanding. There was no turning back now, since the sanding scratched up the surface.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The base of the lamp is black and was a bit beat up, so I gave it a fresh coat of black spray paint too. Then I used a can of <a href="http://amzn.to/1SxJgIP" target="_blank">Krylon Copper Brilliance</a> spray paint. I had to shop around a bit to find this new color, but thankfully Amazon has it!<br />
<br />
The lamp turned out great, and the new color looks much better with my color scheme than the old chrome did. It really gave the old lamp a new life! I also took a plain basket and did a "dipped" paint effect on it with the copper spray paint. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
My house is filled with boys, and while they have been through a lot of toys, Nerf has been a tried and true favorite. So we have A LOT of Nerf! Recently my youngest son has started customizing his Nerf with nice paint jobs, so we want to do a better job of caring for them. </div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><b>BEFORE:</b></i> Basically all the Nerf were thrown in a large plastic tub. Small parts sorting to the bottom and potentially lost forever. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><b>AFTER:</b></i> We used a <b>tall bookshelf </b>with the shelves removed and the back replaced with pegboard to display the best Nerf. A overdoor <b>hanging shoe organizer </b>was used for all the odds and ends. We stored the ammo and magazines on a nearby <b>bookshelf in cute tins</b>.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

We got the bookshelf for free on FreeCycle. It was pretty flimsy, but the added pegboard from Home Depot helped make it more sturdy. It fits nicely into exactly the same spot of as the old plastic tub.</div>

I have a few pairs of Converse that I love, but they are a few years old, well used and looking pretty beat up. I decided use a <a href="http://amzn.to/1JsLfJx" target="_blank">Magic Erase</a>r on them and it worked perfectly! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
I like to cut off a smaller piece of the Magic Eraser and wet it. Then rub it on the white rubber areas of the shoe. Immediately all the dirt, grime and stains came off! As you can see, my shoes look almost new!</div>

Of course I decided to redo what I had! I felt like I had nothing to lose, because the furniture was in such bad shape, so I took some risks.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Before</td></tr>

First, I decided to stain the furniture with a <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000SDRJFS/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B000SDRJFS&linkCode=as2&tag=allensauerconsul&linkId=ZRCEFTKF7MPBPQ3H" target="_blank">black/ebony stain from Minwax</a>. I haven't ever used a colored stain before, so I had no idea how it would look. One of the couches and the chair's cushions were faded and ripped in places. They were beyond repair! Patio cushions are very expensive to replace and I've found it difficult to find the right sizes. I was very lucky to find this great pattern that fit from Walmart for about $30, I needed five.<br />

On the larger couch, I found the cushions to be intact and decided to paint them. They were a light beige, but had stains and discoloration. They needed to be thrown out. Unstead, I used a regular dark grey paint, mixed with water and fabric medium. I found a few tutorials online on how to paint fabric and it turned out beautiful. I painted at least three coats of paint, letting it dry in between. It looks pretty awful after the first coat, but it gets better with each layer.<br />

Finally, I recovered all the pillows. Armed with a Joann's Fabric coupon, I picked an orange duck fabric for one side, and a black and white pattern of outdoor fabric for the other side. They look great against the black pattern of the cushions and the grey.<br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiiEEfp-Ropcy5oK-4QSe7XTKGP6Ytawsm7UU6iAt-U43omtgiBXi6egE23HR5NbPzzOOgAc9LjqxG3QSrSXyg3xInQ2Yk44Nf4Hw0Vr1YBhO8J3E0vJujJm2JzTLiKCoonQQ8lAiR4Gqo/s1600/p-jars.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiiEEfp-Ropcy5oK-4QSe7XTKGP6Ytawsm7UU6iAt-U43omtgiBXi6egE23HR5NbPzzOOgAc9LjqxG3QSrSXyg3xInQ2Yk44Nf4Hw0Vr1YBhO8J3E0vJujJm2JzTLiKCoonQQ8lAiR4Gqo/s1600/p-jars.jpg" width="276" /></a> I've mentioned before that I save all glass jars, and I wasn't kidding. I just wash and clean them, and set them aside... waiting for inspiration or a project to come up. Since I have a household full of boys, I don't get to be girlie often, by I love to use glitter in my projects. <br />
<br />
For the pen jar above I used a Coconut Butter jar that has a nice wide mouth as a sparkly pen jar. After the jar was clean, I used small paint brush to coat the INSIDE of the jar with <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001681L5I/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B001681L5I&linkCode=as2&tag=allensauerconsul&linkId=QMB7W44CPOOHIE6K" target="_blank">Modge Podge</a> and <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0090B8K8O/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B0090B8K8O&linkCode=as2&tag=allensauerconsul&linkId=4GF7G5RFGXGOZ7P7" target="_blank">silver glitter</a>. I let the jar dry three times and redid the painting process after each time. Otherwise you are just moving all the glitter around, but if it is dry you are truly adding another coat. This fully covered the inside of the jar with glitter.<br />
<br />
When dry I did a thick layer of Modge Podge inside the jar with NO glitter to seal layers and so the glitter won't come off. <br />
<br />
In the background is a large olive jar that I used thin painters tape and gold spray paint to created a shiney vase with stripes. The last is a probiotics bottle, with a more narrow mouth. I used <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000Y3GSGI/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B000Y3GSGI&linkCode=as2&tag=allensauerconsul&linkId=JFGCLYGDEW2OX55R" target="_blank">Snow Glitter</a> (which is coarse and opaque, a lot like epsom salts) on the outside, applied with Modge Podge. Here is the same vase with a few pretty flowers.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
This project Mom and I got to do together, which is very rare! We painted it with love for my niece who was spending the summer with my family in California. My guest room doesn't have a dresser, which a long term guest needs. So after scouring a local Free Cycle site with no luck, I put a WANTED notice on Free Cycle and immediately someone offered up this simple dresser. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Mom and I picked up these beautiful glass knobs at Cost Plus World Market and used paints I already had on-hand. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRaM9cmaw16GXK4p3uC8sL6N8-wbqnw5YQ6KoMdAaBFAgYIjhGnko-HIGnzmAaM3FoCKn00WdsFPX-IRlq0tbj46l2YcIKAE5DqzXMQbkspkhMLiWkMKn4a2gHlx6nUyZ8-D1p9Xu7DoU/s1600/p-knob.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRaM9cmaw16GXK4p3uC8sL6N8-wbqnw5YQ6KoMdAaBFAgYIjhGnko-HIGnzmAaM3FoCKn00WdsFPX-IRlq0tbj46l2YcIKAE5DqzXMQbkspkhMLiWkMKn4a2gHlx6nUyZ8-D1p9Xu7DoU/s1600/p-knob.jpg" title="Pretty pretty glass knobs" width="317" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My niece picked the colors and wanted to do three different colors. We removed the original wood knobs, cleaned and <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0000302V3/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B0000302V3&linkCode=as2&tag=allensauerconsul&linkId=FTSFBJXLXE3WUG3A" target="_blank">sanded down </a>the entire dresser. We left the top natural (no stain!), just sealed it with <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000VZJGPO/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B000VZJGPO&linkCode=as2&tag=allensauerconsul&linkId=FDL3ALHBQM5XA3QG" target="_blank">Wipe On Poly</a>. With the drawers removed, we painted the body a light grey. The drawer fronts got Annie Sloan Chalk Paint Aubusson Blue and the drawer trim is a bright white. I started adding <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001AZFOJQ/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B001AZFOJQ&linkCode=as2&tag=allensauerconsul&linkId=3HSAAYHPTBM5AMHD" target="_blank">Floetrol</a> to all my paints a awhile, and found it leaves a smooth, more consistent finish.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The whole dresser was finished with Wipe On Poly after it had dried.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Total cost was just the knobs (since I had everything else in my crafting stash), which wasn't too bad and it turned out so perfect!</div>

<a href="https://www.blogger.com/%22http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0316055433/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=0316055433&linkCode=as2&tag=allensauerconsul&linkId=HT773WDNFBODSLW4" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/e/eb/The_goldfinch_by_donna_tart.png" height="320" width="206" /></a></div>
<a href="https://www.blogger.com/%22http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0316055433/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=0316055433&linkCode=as2&tag=allensauerconsul&linkId=HT773WDNFBODSLW4" target="_blank">The Goldfinch</a> is being made into a movie (or is it a mini-series?) and I can't wait. This is a great book, intense with lots of layers and a big story to tell. I'm so obsessed with The Goldfinch I have created a <a href="https://www.pinterest.com/ambersa42/the-goldfinch-book-club/" target="_blank">Pinterest Board</a> and am hosting a book club with my girlfriends to discuss it!<br />
<br />
Usually by the time I read a book this popular, it has already been made into movie and is coming out shortly, but not this one. The book covers a large timeline, from a 13 year old Theo to his mid-twenties. So Theo, Boris, Pippa would have to be played by young and older actors.<br />
<br />
The story moves from New York City prep school, to the deserted suburbs of Las Vegas, back to New York City with a lot of time in an Amsterdam hotel at the end. Even in posh settings, like a 5th Ave townhouse with great works of art, there is a very seedy undertone and drug use is everywhere.<br />
<br />
It hasn't been cast yet, so here is our chance to pick our cast!<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://images.buddytv.com/usrimages/usr3668966/3668966_a5a090f6-c213-447a-ab2b-6fe1bd190a27-ian-harding3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://images.buddytv.com/usrimages/usr3668966/3668966_a5a090f6-c213-447a-ab2b-6fe1bd190a27-ian-harding3.jpg" height="200" width="132" /></a><a href="http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/sites/default/files/imagecache/blog_post_349_width/2013/10/hunter_parrish_headshot.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/sites/default/files/imagecache/blog_post_349_width/2013/10/hunter_parrish_headshot.jpg" height="200" width="133" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<b>Theo </b>- Theo Decker is a tough one. I imagine him, tall and lean (because he never eats), with long brownish hair in his eyes. Adorable and evokes a motherly response from everyone he meets. He has a restlessness and self loathing you have to believe, but mostly he is vulnerable. Hunter Parrish would be good, but you might have to scrub some of the handsomeness off of him for this. Or Ian Harding.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://24.media.tumblr.com/450e02050c79031206257cbb698981ad/tumblr_n54ck2uTtI1qhx5ydo1_500.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://24.media.tumblr.com/450e02050c79031206257cbb698981ad/tumblr_n54ck2uTtI1qhx5ydo1_500.png" width="165" /></a></div>
<br />
<b>Boris</b> - Dane Dehaan would make a great well travelled, wired up Russian teen/young adult. Loved him in In Treatment. He looks like a young Leonardo DiCaprio, and like Boris, it seems trouble would follow him everywhere.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.hdwallpapersinn.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/mia-wasikowska-.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://www.hdwallpapersinn.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/mia-wasikowska-.jpg" height="200" width="133" /></a></div>
<br />
<b>Kitsey</b> - Mia Wasikowska is perfect for the society ice princess with a few secrets of her own.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i.imgur.com/r5S41Gi.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i.imgur.com/r5S41Gi.jpg" height="200" width="133" /></a></div>
<br />
<b>Larry Decker (Theo's Dad) </b>- A washed up actor who has moved from alcoholic to pill addict gambler, who the ladies love.. ummm Jon Hamm please! He can play dirty and mean, as well as charming. Matt Dillon would be good too.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://cdn.blogs.sheknows.com/celebsalon.sheknows.com/2014/01/Robin-Wright-short-hair.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://cdn.blogs.sheknows.com/celebsalon.sheknows.com/2014/01/Robin-Wright-short-hair.jpg" height="200" width="149" /></a></div>
<br />
<b>Mrs. Barbour </b>- Blonde high society charity dame has Robin Wright written all over it. She is warm and fragile in the end, and Robin could play both off.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://pmcdeadline2.files.wordpress.com/2014/02/sarahsnook__130301010950-200x250__140207153849.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://pmcdeadline2.files.wordpress.com/2014/02/sarahsnook__130301010950-200x250__140207153849.jpg" height="200" width="160" /></a></div>
<br />
<b>Pippa</b> - Pippa one is a hard one, and of course the redhead of the moment is the obvious choice. Someone quirky and not obviously a beauty. Australian actress Sarah Snook is one that comes to mind.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://stylesweekly.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/2015-Kristen-Stewart-Short-Haircut-Messy-Short-Hairstyles-with-Side-Bangs.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://stylesweekly.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/2015-Kristen-Stewart-Short-Haircut-Messy-Short-Hairstyles-with-Side-Bangs.jpg" height="200" width="152" /></a></div>
<br />
<b>Kotju</b> - Wouldn't Kristen Stewart with black stringy hair be great as Boris's strung out high school love interest? Maybe she's too old (and she is older than all the other kids)... but I love idea of her in this role.<br />
<br />
Who do YOU see as Andy, Theo's Mom, Hobie, Welty, Xandra and the rest of the characters?Amberhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09792581305050619838noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-321047469771843433.post-60458248675167399472015-03-15T12:55:00.000-07:002015-03-15T12:55:06.092-07:00Faux Sequined Bag<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br />
I love the idea of adding a little sparkle to my wardrobe! But not too much, you know? Recently I've seen really nice sequined straw bags on the arms of elegant looking women and thought I'd like to give that a try.<br /><br />I picked up a straw bag at Target for $3 and knew this would be the perfect piece to try out my idea on. Instead of sequins, which take a lot of work, I opted for glitter.<br /><br /><b>Supplies: </b>* Straw or Canvas bag or tote<br />
* Painters Blue Tape<br />* Old newspapers<br />* Fabric Glue<br />* Fine Glitter</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhG2GektQ3jkwktQOAbGexwD5uvjy9IYM5R_8fQx6bUAoUOhWYK4Jlk1izvqwYRtTjpF7xo0-i6Ej0c45dNRhvuPyA_ZbP7AuwRVn9S-XwGIuw3B2H4pYKqixQ11Vv4WdjqYzc4vY2Bvqw/s1600/glitter+bag+mishmashers.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhG2GektQ3jkwktQOAbGexwD5uvjy9IYM5R_8fQx6bUAoUOhWYK4Jlk1izvqwYRtTjpF7xo0-i6Ej0c45dNRhvuPyA_ZbP7AuwRVn9S-XwGIuw3B2H4pYKqixQ11Vv4WdjqYzc4vY2Bvqw/s1600/glitter+bag+mishmashers.jpg" height="320" width="215" /></a><div class="" style="clear: both; display: inline !important; text-align: center;">
<b>How To:<br /></b></div>
1. Use painters blue tape to make a line around the area you want glittered. <br /><br />2. Use a small brush to generously coat the area with glue. You may want to work in sections to keep glue wet. <br /><br />3. While holding over the old newspaper, and while the glue is still wet, cover glue with glitter. <br /><br />4. Once dry, shake the bag (while over the newspaper) to removed any unglued glitter. Fold the news paper in half, catching the glitter and return it to the glitter jar.<br /><br />5. Spread a generous layer of glue on top of the glitter area and edges, using the brush. This will seal in the glitter, so you don't leave a glitter trail behind you!</div>

Chalkboards are all the rage right now, and I've been using them to decorate for the holidays and parties in lots of different ways. But I've always found it a pain to have use chalkboard paint on these projects. I had a huge charity party I was responsible for decorating and I started thinking of how other black mediums would look with chalk. It needed to easy and inexpensive too! The three methods I use below held up really well and looked and reacted like a real chalkboard.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHDGfxrmXOQoAP5M0WAEY0zDZRNJKqtLIapSazkIypJLiAuGe1r70YKkT8xPnGKnBtMf0wLE9X_NXR_xs2NfvZ3xE432bSU6Kz7k27F3Nil9ggAuNU0JzQpRKMN5SxL9gjzY8VBUa75Ko/s1600/p-chalkboard+Collage.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHDGfxrmXOQoAP5M0WAEY0zDZRNJKqtLIapSazkIypJLiAuGe1r70YKkT8xPnGKnBtMf0wLE9X_NXR_xs2NfvZ3xE432bSU6Kz7k27F3Nil9ggAuNU0JzQpRKMN5SxL9gjzY8VBUa75Ko/s1600/p-chalkboard+Collage.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><u>1. Butcher Paper</u></b></span><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000F8TBWU/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B000F8TBWU&linkCode=as2&tag=allensauerconsul&linkId=NH2UGTYAM47AAUHA" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com/widgets/q?_encoding=UTF8&ASIN=B000F8TBWU&Format=_SL110_&ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=allensauerconsul" /></a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This could not have been easier! If you don't already have access to butch paper, it ~ $<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000F8TBWU/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B000F8TBWU&linkCode=as2&tag=allensauerconsul&linkId=JA7Q2H7FKYD6WN23" target="_blank">15 for 100ft roll</a> that will last forever. The butch paper as chalkboard is perfect large projects, like my Selfie Wall. Test both sides of the paper and see which works best for your project. But for me, it worked as is. I also used butcher paper in the small gold photo frames. I have erased and reused a few times and the are great. (Note: I did not "<a href="http://salvagedinspirations.com/how-to-season-a-new-chalkboard/" target="_blank">season</a>" the selfie wall and it worked great, but I usually do for all my other chalkboard projects)</div>

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b><u><span style="font-size: large;">2. Black Poster Board</span></u></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Black Poster board worked great for me too, and available at big box stores like Target, RiteAid, etc. It is ~ <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00F63QDWU/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00F63QDWU&linkCode=as2&tag=allensauerconsul&linkId=QKJLW2M3VFF6GE4J" target="_blank">$1 22"x28" sheets</a> that will fit into poster frames you already own (I display my kids art work in large poster frames and removed them and replace it with the black poster board for the weekend. More substantial or ornamental frames would look even better). I used this method for large Menu Boards that I put on easels, and it turned out perfect! (Note: I did "<a href="http://salvagedinspirations.com/how-to-season-a-new-chalkboard/" target="_blank">season</a>" the Black Poster Board and it made the look more authentic). </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgS0Ml3IbO_5wcpIeTegsROo9QW95kqzK_95opwPYZlbKrnqmcehqHMN3CVSDq-SrzNTqJUeqqQ6-RQ9GxklmUi-O8fus7lXw-BjCuoT9NFUl9yi6FdY1sdDd4J9HatfnQ9_APbcdbIPJQ/s1600/chalkboard.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgS0Ml3IbO_5wcpIeTegsROo9QW95kqzK_95opwPYZlbKrnqmcehqHMN3CVSDq-SrzNTqJUeqqQ6-RQ9GxklmUi-O8fus7lXw-BjCuoT9NFUl9yi6FdY1sdDd4J9HatfnQ9_APbcdbIPJQ/s1600/chalkboard.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><u>3. Plain Old Black Paint</u></b></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
That's right... black paint works as a chalkboard too! It doesn't HAVE to be a special chalkboard paint. I used an old can of Glidden black paint on cardboard cutouts, and that I used for directional signs at the party. FOOD, BAR, RESTROOM, etc. Plain old black paint is much less expensive than chalkboard paint, so this was a big win for me! I was just experimenting, so if this didn't work it was just cardboard I was painting so. (Note: I did "<a href="http://salvagedinspirations.com/how-to-season-a-new-chalkboard/" target="_blank">season</a>" the plan black paint, just like you would with chalkboard paint)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5GasqBcVSnvTdLTAhomIiS-H4fEQB-uDtSul-YK_2dF4TROo7JqsYr1H8LduG8CtLev3ETUWsigBr-WyIR_726A8Q3VLJQYFe061zYJtMaave_UPcSCvTyVvc0aJy15engpYxOvQ2nIo/s1600/chalkboard2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5GasqBcVSnvTdLTAhomIiS-H4fEQB-uDtSul-YK_2dF4TROo7JqsYr1H8LduG8CtLev3ETUWsigBr-WyIR_726A8Q3VLJQYFe061zYJtMaave_UPcSCvTyVvc0aJy15engpYxOvQ2nIo/s1600/chalkboard2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b><u><span style="font-size: large;">4. Traditional Chalkboard Spray Paint</span></u></b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Below I reused cookie and coffee tins to make Christmas gifts for the kids teachers. I used <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000RMPLJ6/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B000RMPLJ6&linkCode=as2&tag=allensauerconsul&linkId=W27AKTY7ISRAJV3Q" target="_blank">Chalkboard Spray Paint</a> on these pieces, and you definitely need two coats of paint. I filled the coffee tin with a 1/2 lb of nice coffee beans, and the others with candies. So the paint works great too :) and I'll continue to use chalkboard spray paint on projects like this.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I host a charity book club with a group of friends, and it is always a challenge when my turn comes around to set the tone for the evening. You want to serve items and decorate around the theme of the book. Of course we had to include some <a href="http://www.tablespoon.com/recipes/penguin-appetizers/f1f0e8bd-c68d-45c2-96df-9751ecff5203" target="_blank">penguins</a>, and I wore the yellow scarf and sunglasses part of night.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The highlight was <a href="http://thepioneerwoman.com/cooking/2007/08/the_great_cobbl/" target="_blank">Pioneer Woman's Blackberry Cobbler</a> in celebration of blackberry bushes that took over her backyard. I also served little Trader Joes Pizzas, just like the pizza cart they had in the disastrous party. At the bar I served a Pink Sangria (equal parts Rose wine and Blood Orange Soda, with fruit garnish) that I dubbed The Pink Penguin. Here is a great article called "<a href="http://www.seattlemet.com/eat-and-drink/nosh-pit/articles/whered-you-go-for-dinner-bernadette" target="_blank">Where'd You Go (for dinner) Bernadette?</a>" that links up the actual Seattle version of the fictional family's meal plan and might give you more ideas.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b><span style="font-size: large;">Table Setting:</span></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I made my little chalkboard menu from black butcher paper, which works just like a chalkboard! I love using black butcher paper and black poster board as a chalkboard, it is so easy and super inexpensive! I collect cool wrapping paper too, and use it for all sorts of project, but rarely to wrap a gift (go figure!). Here I used it as a table runner since it's an easy way to add color and patterns to the table. The vase is a reused olive jar the I used thin painters tape and gold spray paint on to add some shine. </div>

Recently I needed to make a large number of inexpensive Thank You Favors and decided on repurposing mason jars into small flower vases. I hosted a Thank You Party for all the ladies who have volunteered for a school event and used the jars as a table center piece, but near the door so they could take one when they left. It was the day before Mother's Day, so it made for a really nice gesture. </div>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjoRe1bj2-Q4vHgPW7q7lM01x63jR5B8xHAEwvMhLfZpqh5nOMuBnrg3ea044P26oDcXmJGyYW3Py6gcMKpDwUCCh57NcXKhxjhy2vREq2ksBwEu5-CWSYMDy0X40zGYGj0YnYbggimX_s/s1600/p-flower+jars.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjoRe1bj2-Q4vHgPW7q7lM01x63jR5B8xHAEwvMhLfZpqh5nOMuBnrg3ea044P26oDcXmJGyYW3Py6gcMKpDwUCCh57NcXKhxjhy2vREq2ksBwEu5-CWSYMDy0X40zGYGj0YnYbggimX_s/s1600/p-flower+jars.jpg" height="582" width="640" /></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><u>How To:</u></b></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: start;">I used purchased mason jars at Smart & Final and ran them all through the dishwasher wash off any dirt or oil. I then used painters tape to create a striped effect on half the jars, the rest I painted completely. </span><span style="text-align: start;">The party had a candy theme, so I used two different pink spray paints. I quickly created printable tags and saved the document for you use <a href="https://docs.google.com/document/d/1T1dswhJLkbhW2wWlJlWBxy721XQapVgKzqCQm3823I0/edit?usp=sharing" target="_blank">HERE</a>. Printing them on Cardstock makes a nice little tags. (Cardstock is basically very thick paper and handy to always have on-hand). I cut out the tags, punched a hole and wrapped twine around each jar. My co-host brought two bunches of beautiful flowers that we trimmed up and added to each jar. </span></div>

<h2 style="text-align: center;">
Decorating our Fireplace Mirror and Mantle</h2>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I love leafing through the decorating magazines and mentally get a picture of what I can do with my own home. Several years ago, probably 14 or so, I saw this very lavish entry hall picture in a magazine that had magnificent decorations around the mirror and also on the entry table below the mirror. I had obtained a large & lovely mirror when my home in Joplin had been used on the Historic Homes Tour. So I purchased the mirror at cost since that is the way you can acquire beautiful items if you allow your home to be utilized for the tour...and all at cost.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So I took that idea from the magazine and for many years I've been decorating the mirror with Christmas decor and I've also added lights to the garland. Over the years I've updated the decor on the old garland with new, bright and shiny flowers and fruit but the white balls (string of lights have lasted through the years. So here is the finished project, one taken at night with the lights on the garland and the other in the daytime without the lights.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The iridescent and see through bows were made from a spool of ribbon I bought back in 1988 and each year I fluff them up and use them over and over.</div>
<h3 style="text-align: center;">
Staircase Garland, Bows and Lights</h3>
<div style="text-align: center;">
When we moved to Tulsa in 2002 I was thrilled to have an open staircase once again and so totally remembered the beautifully decorated staircases from the home decorating magazines. This picture is not the best angle, as my husband brings in from the outdoors in the winter, the 15' Ponytail Palm which stands in the open ceiling area at the base of the stairs. So that blocks taking a picture of the entire staircase. He loves his plants and I love him so the palm tree stays.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I simply wrap inexpensive green garland with gold garland and I was fortunate to find the white ball lights again in a bigger size than I used on the fireplace mirror. I use the wire inside the green garland and wrap around the electrical cord to hold the lights in place. I made the large red bows from a large roll or ribbon purchased, of course, after Christmas on the 1/2 off specials. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I have large plastic totes where I keep one marked fireplace/mirror & mantle and another tote marked staircase decor. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I love the festive look of the staircase and fireplace/mirror decor. I just put on the beautiful Christmas DVDs, light the fireplace, plug in the lights and my world becomes peaceful and golden in the midst of all the hustle and bustle of this time of year.</div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">on the tree, next to my sister's ornament</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Every year as we put our tree up it is fun to see the ornaments we have collected throughout the years. This year as I unpacked the ornaments, I surprised to find those that my sister Misha had made me. They were simple, but thoughtful, and I had not really given them much thought in the past. Except now she is gone, and they are a beautiful memory of her. To know that she took time to make something by hand for my family and ship it off to us is very special. It was bittersweet. I can just see her, sitting in her living room with the supplies gathered around; curling ribbons and writing with paint markers in her pretty handwriting. Growing up we did a lot of homemade ornaments and she was carrying on that tradition.<br />
<br />
So after reading a post at <a href="http://www.rosemary-and-thyme.com/blog/2014/11/26/clay-imprint-ornaments-diy" target="_blank">Rosemary and Thyme</a> today, I realized I had everything I needed to make a few special ornaments for my friends and family! Hopefully they will think of us each year as they decorate their trees! This is a very simple project, I used our Clay Polymer that is pliable until baked for 15 minutes and rolled it out with a jar. After some thought and searching through all our cookie cutters, we decided to use a small jar lid to cut the circles and a straw to cut the twine hole. We had to do a custom shape for those with much longer names :) I recently bought a kit to imprint letters onto cookies and we used it to print each family's name. On the back I used a toothpick to hand draw a heart with the year '14.<br />

Roller - I used a small jar<br />
Cookie Cutter/lid/sharp knife - to cut shapes<br />
Straw - the perfect size to cut out the twine hole<br />
Glitter and glue (optional)<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Follow the directions for your clay on baking time and let them cool before tying on some pretty twine or ribbon. I decided to dress up a few, that I won't be sending via mail, with glitter around the edges.<br />
<br />
I think they turned out so sweet, yet simple enough to go with any decorations. I will use them to wrap up a few gifts too. It was a good project to involve my boys too, and they made one for each of their teachers to include with a gift card.

Isn't it amazing how in decorating we get one idea about one item we want to change that leads to something else and then....before we know it, we've changed everything. Take for instance, this old pine table I saw across the street from a restaurant while having lunch with friends. It was sitting on the sidewalk with several other vintage tables at this antique shop and of course I could not leave without dragging my friends across the street to get a closer look. Long story short, I took Mike back, he loved it and we bought it after deciding to get rid of my lovely Asian style dinning room set with sideboard. But this meant that I had to have something to replace the sideboard which held all my good dishes and silver serving pieces. We also picked up 4 kinda matching Windsor chairs for the pine table.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
In the meantime, we were emptying Mike's Mom's home in Carthage Missouri of the family furniture after she passed. There was this old 1950s hutch that caught my eye and after deciding that yes, it could hold with modification all 4 sets of my plates, cups, bowls, and silverware. I knew I had to put color to the old hutch though. So this blog is about that undertaking, turning the old rough looking hutch into something that would give my dining room a kick in the pants!!<br />
<h3>
Hutch being unloaded of its wares prior to shipping to Tulsa</h3>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8sSpjjXAAquHXVmz_ZqgtllR54DvjzCpa5W-e8S5Ee8vrMguCgY5Y4Om2NwJpzHNjQs2ZU9npMlxcqghBxE6p3gR4oGkciJwvDT-UnZZ864D-Uonwpo0uvsD0CuPZWJOnKhV5rvEatjw/s1600/hutch+at+margaret.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8sSpjjXAAquHXVmz_ZqgtllR54DvjzCpa5W-e8S5Ee8vrMguCgY5Y4Om2NwJpzHNjQs2ZU9npMlxcqghBxE6p3gR4oGkciJwvDT-UnZZ864D-Uonwpo0uvsD0CuPZWJOnKhV5rvEatjw/s1600/hutch+at+margaret.jpg" height="320" width="239" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
I'd never undertaken such a major project and without my own shop or place to work, it was necessary to take the deck and the kitchen dining area for different parts of the project. <br />
<br />
First, like in all my furniture painting projects, I had to sand the top to always expose the beauty of the wood prior to painting the remainder of the hutch. That's just something I always do with every piece I paint. Guess you would say it is my signature. Amber typically does the same thing with her furniture painting as well. The top would then later get 4 coats of satin MinWax varnish between all sandings. Again, I used my handy orbital sander to get a great finish. However, once the old varnish was off using the orbital sander, the other 3 sandings required a fine grit sandpaper which I did by hand, not using the sander....just gives a finer finish.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<h3>
And the work has begun</h3>

<br />
All hinges and drawers and doors had to be removed and sanded separately. I used low odor mineral spirits to clean off all of the old residue from the sanding process and then wiped it all clean with soft rags that wouldn't leave lint. Below I've taken the project to the kitchen dining area where I used lots of drop cloths and when painting I put the legs up on short blocks of 2 X 4s.<br />

Making your own Chalk Paint</h3>

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<span style="line-height: 14.6400003433228px; text-align: start;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">There are a few already made Chalk Paints on the market; most all are quite expensive. I make my own with the following recipe. Mix 1/3 cup of Plaster of Paris and 1/3 Cup of cool water; <u>stir until completely smooth</u>. Mix that with 1 cup of really good latex paint (Lowe's Valspar works great) and stir thoroughly. This will make enough chalk-finish paint for one coat on a six-drawer dresser. I needed to use two coats of the red paint to get the depth of color I wanted. Chalk-finish paint <u>should not be stored and reused</u>. If you have a smaller project, mix smaller amounts of plaster, paint, and water in the same proportions.</span></span><span style="font-family: inherit; line-height: 14.6400003433228px; text-align: start;"> </span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: inherit; line-height: 14.6400003433228px; text-align: start;">I did not create a video for you to watch the process but there are many online that will tell you about the painting, the distressing of the wood to give it a worn look and finally the waxing of the entire project. They do not all use the same process however. For the finish, yo</span>u can either use a chalk paint wax or a wipe-on or brush-on poly for the finish. I used a chalk paint wax and a brush and then buffed off the wax by hand with a soft cloth (lint-free). This process gives a nice patina to the color of the finish paint.</div>

The knobs to the red China cabinet I had purchased in 1993 (see picture below) were wooden. I replaced the wooden knobs with a beautiful find from Anthropology. But they no longer carry the same beautiful red knobs. However a trip to Hobby Lobby here in Tulsa to sort through their dozens upon dozens of beautiful choices for drawer pulls, produced an almost identical pull. YES!!!<br />
<br />
The two drawers had no dividers so Mike and I made dividers to hold the silver ware and serving pieces.<br />

<br />
<br />
I enjoyed the distressing part and if you've not done this, just take torn pieces of a medium grit sand paper and hit the places where wear and tear might happen. That would be around edges, stand out decor and really...any other place that strikes your fancy to add to the charm of the piece. You wax the furniture piece after you distress it so you still need to wipe down any paint you've loosened.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The top two shelves of the upper part of the hutch had groves for the plates to be displayed, but the top of the lower part of the hutch itself had no grooves to place a third row of plates. I found a long strip of natural grain molding that matched the maple top of the lower part of the hutch and glued it in place ... just enough so that I could stand up another row of plates. That way, my entire set of my best serving pieces were on display. More than one way to "skin a cat..." as my sweet Mother used to say!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Hutch in place prior to bottom plates were on display so that you can see both the newly completed red hutch along with red China cabinet I've had since about 1993.</div>

<br />
I am so glad that I chose this project. It was fun, tested my patience and I learned so much. I've got a really great old chair that will sit at the end of the pine table. It is going to get a coat of matching red chalk paint soon. But that is another day. When that is done, there will be a post for the pine table, the Windsor chairs and the funky cushions that puts the icing on the cake.<br />

<br /></div>
<h2 style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Beautiful Christmas Home Decor for Outside</h2>
<div style="text-align: center;">
For several years I've been putting time into decorating the outside of my home with garland, bows, Christmas balls. You can do this and you do not need to spend an arm and a leg buying already "fancied-up" and expensive garland. I buy the inexpensive garland, wrap it with lights, tie on a couple sizes of Christmas balls (red) and join it at the top with a pretty 36" decorative swag. The swag below was already decorated with glittery balls and artificial fruit and gold twigs. I joined the two sides of the garland and the top swag with the two strings of LED lights (any lights will do but less chance of burn out when using LED lights). Note that I made a big burgundy bow, fastened it high about the door with a couple of green velvet and gold streamers for a more elegant effect.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
When I first put this together about 10 years ago, I found really large white cup hooks and they stay mounted up either side of the door (4 on each side) year round. I put three above the door frame, another up high for the burgundy bow and four down either side of the door frame. The hooks keep everything from blowing in the wind and the garland close to the door frame. I hide the bottom of the string of lights under the porch door mat and the outside plug is close to the door. I do not bother to unplug it during the day time. And by the way, the wreath was really really inexpensive, but elegant.</div>

Garage Light Wreath</h3>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFi5lfdVGWfn6n8ccmVtB-xZ2ytTbymH02gXoa9Oi_CJx0QhaxFpXLNCRCoU4cRqU6RZ0I9WhyphenhyphenTvDhpU2inwRrqafqFLyLgAv26xQQkfgkXOD3CyIYpawgQVQdZtasS3tjqGrF1enDgNU/s1600/Christmas+garage+light+wreath.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFi5lfdVGWfn6n8ccmVtB-xZ2ytTbymH02gXoa9Oi_CJx0QhaxFpXLNCRCoU4cRqU6RZ0I9WhyphenhyphenTvDhpU2inwRrqafqFLyLgAv26xQQkfgkXOD3CyIYpawgQVQdZtasS3tjqGrF1enDgNU/s1600/Christmas+garage+light+wreath.jpg" height="400" width="298" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The Garage Light Wreaths are quite inexpensive and I just wrap them with left over gold garland and found inexpensive bows at a close-out sale. I just slide them up over the bottom of the light and push hard for them to fit over and behind the top back of the light. They are simple but really add much color and festiveness.</div>
<h3 style="text-align: center;">
Garden Gate</h3>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTmWcDF3RRmkq3E48jhaNoIqh3WhtiqJ8QxkjQq10XdYpYDg3U4ztikhYtZSy0GQOCfzcwSh9btpcNao4diq5nFBjbVwlfCsJ12-KAKjVCiTz1bO-Zt_knDYgPxwY1UNFV5-bCn-Du9IE/s1600/Christmas+Garden+Gate+wreath.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTmWcDF3RRmkq3E48jhaNoIqh3WhtiqJ8QxkjQq10XdYpYDg3U4ztikhYtZSy0GQOCfzcwSh9btpcNao4diq5nFBjbVwlfCsJ12-KAKjVCiTz1bO-Zt_knDYgPxwY1UNFV5-bCn-Du9IE/s1600/Christmas+Garden+Gate+wreath.jpg" height="400" width="298" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
For a couple of years now I've been putting a bouquet on my Garden Gate with very little thought. Because we have done extensive work in our back yard this summer, I wanted to enhance the outside approach to the backyard by fancying up the Garden Gate. I had a gallon of miss-mixed paint I picked up at Home Depot for $5 that I've used for several projects and figured it would be </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
appropriate for the garden gate. The hardware on the gate are all estate sale and flea market finds that I had been collecting. This summer I put a mixed bouquet of artificial summer flowers in a basket</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
to hang on hooks attached to the gate. I've just taken down the basket of artificial fall flowers and</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
hung the Christmas wreath, a little bigger than the garage light wreaths, but used the same bow.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I've had the wreaths for many projects over the years, but now I am sure they will have a permanent</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Holiday Home!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So for your own home....you've got time to do this and above all you can keep your expenses really low. You've probably got all you need right now in your attic or stored in the garage in forgotten boxes. Your guests will arrive with a feeling of being warmly welcomed and your neighbors will</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
appreciate the beautiful addition to the neighborhood.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

<h2>
<b>Rewiring old table and floor lamps - Yes you can!</b></h2>
<b><br /></b>
<b>VINTAGE LAMPS</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>Blow off the dust, replace the old wire, decorate a new shade and "ta da" you have a new lovely!</i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><br /></i></div>
Refurbishing old lamps caught my fancy several years ago. The second hand stores were full of a forgotten era of 1930's and 40's lamps (some floor lamps & some table lamps) where I saw a lot of beauty. Parts were missing, cords were old and rotting and the shades were long gone. A co-worker told me how easy it was to rewire lamps and that was all I needed to take an old lamp I had acquired from a friend moving to Oregon, and give it new life. I bought an electrical wiring book at a yard sale and learned the simple truths of rewiring cast-off old lamps, giving a second life to beautiful vintage pieces, long forgotten. Today you can go right to the internet and youtube, so I've copied a link here for you to see how to rewire lamps and learn. I've now given reworked and beautified old lamps to family and friends and sold some in my booth at the Dewey Street Market in Sapulpa, OK.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/L2xXzIFeB78" width="420"></iframe>
</div>
<br />
I have a new project on a couple of really old darling, probably 1930s or 40's dresser lamps. Mike's Mom passed in 2013 and was a collector of beautiful dish and glassware and we've spent hours going through these beautiful pieces. These two really sweet dresser lamps came out of a dusty old box in the family's attic and I immediately saw the vintage quality and beauty. Small, decorative lamps were a mainstay in a ladies' dressing room in times past. They were, of course really dirty, but there were no scratchs or chips so, I cut out the old cords, removed all of the old electrical parts and fittings and put the glass lamps to soak....and OH! did they sparkle.<br />

<br />
The next job was to rewire these lamps and using a dark electrical cord was definitely not an option on these two sweet dainty lamps. I found a clear see-through cord with silver wire and rewired the lamp. I chose silver wire as the bulb bases were silver. I asked Mike's sister Debbie if she remembered these lamps and she said definitely as they were on her Mom's dresser for several years and remembered that the shades were fabric and not glass. Lowes carried these drum-type small shades and I picked them up for about $6 each. You can pay a small fortune for shades if you buy them at a lamp specialty shop. Even for this size, you'd pay around $30 each.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
I lived with the lamps and shades for a while and decided where I wanted to make their permanent home, at least for now and that was on the old hutch that also came out of Mike's Mom home as we prepared to put the house on the market. I've chalk painted that hutch a China red and this will be another post in the near future. Once I'd decided where the lamps would go, dictated how I was going to decorate and cover the shades. I'm not very fond of plain shades and generally cover them with fabric and trim to fit a special place.</div>

Side Note......I bought the above chair at the Tulsa Flea Market a few years back as I saw some something about it that I liked. It had good bones and some character although the seat was black naugahyde and the wood frame was just a varnished wood. Really pretty ugly at first viewing, but I liked the cane back. So I talked the owner into selling it as it was his seat at the flea market. Picked it up for about $17, $10 less than the seller wanted to sell it to me. I had a gallon of red paint I picked up at Home Depot for $5 as it had been miss mixed. I love finding these paint bargains and snatch them up if the color is odd and a little different as there will always be a project, if not now then later. Once I'd decided on the red paint for the chair to match my red China cupboard, I ran to my favorite fabric store as I had already eyed this Asian-type fabric. Sorry to take you around the barn, so to speak, about the chair....but the left over scraps of fabric were the perfect answer for the vintage dresser lamp's shades and will go in our dining room along with the chair.</div>

I will be using fabric glue for the shade to adhere the fabric and the brown chocolate trim which is called gimp. I have covered many shades with fabric and glue and have these handy tiny hair clips, miniature, to hold the fabric and gimp in place while the glue dries. I will need to make a small pleat in the fabric as I glue it around the drum shade as it has just a slight flare to the shape. This process keeps the fabric aligned. Now you know why many shades have the fabric pleated. Note the little hair clamp I've used here at the top to hold the glued fabric in place while I work my way around the entire lamp and while folding in the pleats.</div>

<b>Another Vintage Floor Lamp Rewired w/Newly Covered Shade</b><br />
Now that these little lamp shades are finished, I wanted to share how you can also cover a shade with fabric if the shade is great flared/fluted. Using brown paper as a pattern, I trace over the fabric already on the shade and make enough gores to cover the lamp. It is best if the pieces of wedge-shaped fabric just meets each other wedge. This is so that when you glue your decorative trim (gimp, ribbon, etc) over the seams where the wedges meet, there will be no bulk. Again, use the little tiny hair clips to hold the fabric in place on the inside of the shade, top and bottom.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
I love reusing and repurposing old coffee and altoid tins. The Altoid Tins make great gift card holders! Imagine including your next birthday or Christmas gift card in one of these! But I also like to use them as emergency kits to carry your purse or child's backpack. Include a few band-aides, safety pins, ear plugs, ear buds etc.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
In the picture, two of the tins I have Modge Podged and covered with paper. The yellow chevron I printed myself and added my initials, which would make for a great personalized gift. The red chevron I used wrapping paper. Both I hand painted the top edge with craft paint, since wrapping the paper over the edge would have prevented the tin from closing properly.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
For the Glittered Tin, I first spray painted it. When dry, I then covered the lid with a watered down glue and glitter. I did a few layers and then when complete dry, I covered with just the watered down glue. That will prevent the glitter from falling off.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I love these little tins!<br />
